A capacitor is one of the smallest parts in a Daikin air conditioner — and one of the most common reasons a unit suddenly won’t start. It’s also one of the most misdiagnosed: a failed capacitor can look like a dead motor, a faulty compressor, or a control fault. This guide explains what the capacitor does, how to tell when it’s failing, why replacing it is a job for a licensed technician, and how to get the right genuine Daikin part.
What a capacitor does
Daikin units use capacitors to start and run their motors — the indoor and outdoor fans and the compressor. A start capacitor gives the motor the brief, high jolt it needs to begin turning; a run capacitor provides the steady boost that keeps it turning efficiently. When a capacitor weakens, the motor works harder to start and run — and eventually it can’t start at all.
Signs your Daikin capacitor is failing

The fan or compressor hums but won’t start, or is slow to start.

The system starts and stops intermittently, or trips the circuit.

A swollen, domed or leaking capacitor top — a clear sign it has failed.

Weak airflow or weak cooling as a struggling fan motor slows down.

Why capacitors fail
Capacitors are consumable parts, and heat is their main enemy — in Australian conditions an outdoor unit bakes through every summer, which steadily ages the capacitor. Voltage surges, age and high run-hours all shorten its life, so it’s normal for a capacitor to need replacing well before the rest of the unit does.
Safety: why this is a licensed technician’s job
A capacitor stores an electrical charge even after the power is switched off — enough to give a serious shock. Testing and replacing one is work for a licensed technician, who will safely discharge the capacitor, measure its actual capacitance against the rated value, and confirm the correct replacement. It isn’t a DIY job.
